Six Kid-Friendly Window Treatment Tips

June 19, 2014 By webmaster

Child-Friendly Window TreatmentsAccording to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, window treatments with cords kill about one child per month, making them one of the top five hidden safety hazards in the home. Thankfully, it is possible to keep your windows covered and your children safe. Just follow one or more of these six kid-friendly window treatment tips.

Window Treatment Experts in Kansas City

1. Secure Your Window Cord

If you currently have window treatments with long cords, the easiest and fastest way to improve your children’s safety is simply to wrap the cords up where your children cannot reach them. While this isn’t a good long-term solution, as children can reach up and unwrap them, it is a start.

2. Choose Window Treatments with a Circular Loop

If your windows are high enough off of the ground that your children cannot reach them, window treatments with a small circular loop instead of a long, dangling cord may be enough. Make sure that your children cannot reach them no matter what they climb on.

3. Install Enclosed Blinds

Keep your children safer and make your cleaning easier by installing enclosed blinds. Enclosed blinds are typically enclosed between two layers of glass, making getting to the cords impossible.

4. Choose Wand-Controlled Window Treatments

For larger windows, wand-controlled blinds may be your perfect solution. They are easy to open and shut, and they don’t have any cords for your children to get tangled up in.

5. Opt for Roller Shades

Roller shades are another kid-friendly option as long as you make sure that they are strongly secured to the wall. Again, there are no cords or strings for your children to play with.

6. Choose Curtains

Curtains are often one of the easiest and most practical window treatments for families. They are easy to install, easy to clean, and they come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Most importantly of all, however, they do not pose as great of a strangulation risk.
